Down Syndrome Research Foundation
At the Down Syndrome Research Foundation we initiate and participate in research that provides insight into the unique learning style of individuals with Down syndrome. The data collected is analyzed and pilot interventions and educational programs are developed and offered. These programs test the understanding of the brain and are evaluated to see the impact on our students.
The non-profit Down Syndrome Research Foundation, established in 1995, is driven by our mission to ensure a brighter future for individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities by significantly increasing their cognitive and social development. To this end, our modern facility located in Burnaby, British Columbia, is equipped with classrooms, indoor and outdoor assessment areas, a lending library, a meeting room with video-conferencing capabilities, and a leading-edge research laboratory. that uses magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain imaging technology.
In many ways, our mission aligns with those of other agencies supporting people with intellectual disabilities. We differ, however, in several ways. For instance...
- we push the boundaries of disability - helping people with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities optimize their abilities and enhance their quality of life
- we do our own cutting-edge research and publish the results
- we use our research results, plus the latest findings of other research groups, to develop, fine-tune and implement programs that improve the academic, social, language and health development of people of all ages living with intellectual disabilities
- we receive no ongoing operating funds from government, which gives us great flexibility in planning and implementing our research and education programs
The Down Syndrome Research Foundation doesn’t just serve Burnaby and Greater Vancouver, we share with the world our latest research data and insights, and our educational approaches.
